UK Crime Rate 2026 โ National Overview & Trends
A data-driven look at crime across England and Wales. We break down the latest figures by category, region, and trend to help you understand what's really happening with crime in the UK.
National Crime Statistics at a Glance
These numbers come from police-recorded crime data, which captures offences reported to and recorded by the 43 territorial police forces in England and Wales. It's worth noting that not all crime is reported โ the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) estimates the true number of incidents is higher, particularly for crimes like domestic abuse and fraud.
Crime by Category
Understanding what types of crime are being recorded helps put the numbers in perspective. Here's how the 6.7 million offences break down:
Approximately 2.2 million offences. This is the largest single category and includes everything from harassment and common assault to grievous bodily harm. Around 40% of these involve no physical injury โ they include threats, harassment, and stalking. Violent crime with injury has fallen 3% year-on-year.
Around 1.5 million offences covering shoplifting, theft from the person, bicycle theft, and other stealing. Shoplifting has risen 8% compared to last year, driven partly by cost-of-living pressures. Theft from the person remains concentrated in urban centres and tourist areas.
About 580,000 offences. This includes vandalism, graffiti, and deliberate fire-setting. The category has been on a long-term downward trend, falling 4% this year alone. It remains more prevalent in urban areas and social housing estates.
Roughly 530,000 offences. These range from drunk and disorderly behaviour to affray. Night-time economy areas see the highest concentrations, with Friday and Saturday nights accounting for over 35% of all public order incidents.
Around 310,000 offences, split roughly evenly between residential and commercial burglary. Residential burglary has been falling steadily since 2019, partly due to improved home security technology and changes in how people use their homes post-pandemic.
The remaining offences span drug offences (5%), sexual offences (3%), vehicle offences (7%), possession of weapons (1%), fraud (4%), and other miscellaneous crimes. Fraud continues to grow as more activity moves online.
Anti-Social Behaviour
Anti-social behaviour (ASB) is recorded separately from crime but has a major impact on communities. In the year ending March 2026, police forces logged approximately 1.4 million ASB incidents โ a 6% decrease from the previous year.
ASB covers a broad range of issues: noisy neighbours, fly-tipping, abandoned vehicles, street drinking, and nuisance behaviour. While not criminal offences in themselves, persistent ASB can significantly affect quality of life and often correlates with higher crime rates in an area.
Regional Variations
Crime is not evenly spread across the country. Urban areas record more crime per capita than rural ones, and there are significant differences between police force areas:
Highest Crime Rates (per 1,000 population)
- Cleveland โ 128 crimes per 1,000 (historically one of the highest in England)
- Greater Manchester โ 119 per 1,000 (driven by Manchester city centre)
- West Midlands โ 115 per 1,000 (Birmingham is the primary driver)
- West Yorkshire โ 112 per 1,000 (Leeds and Bradford contribute most)
- Metropolitan Police โ 108 per 1,000 (London's vast population skews the rate)
Lowest Crime Rates (per 1,000 population)
- Surrey โ 52 crimes per 1,000 (the safest force area in England)
- Dyfed-Powys โ 54 per 1,000 (rural Wales)
- Suffolk โ 57 per 1,000
- Warwickshire โ 59 per 1,000
- North Yorkshire โ 60 per 1,000

Key Trends in 2026
Several notable trends are shaping the crime picture this year:
Shoplifting Surge
Shoplifting is up 8% nationally, continuing a trend that began in 2023. Retailers report that organised theft groups are responsible for a growing share of incidents. The government's decision to remove the threshold below which shoplifting was treated as a summary offence has led to more offences being formally recorded.
Falling Burglary Rates
Residential burglary has dropped 12% since 2022. Smart doorbells, improved locks, and the lasting shift towards hybrid working (meaning more homes are occupied during the day) have all played a role. Commercial burglary has also declined as businesses invest in better security.
Fraud and Cyber Crime
While police-recorded fraud accounts for about 4% of the total, the CSEW estimates that fraud is actually the most common crime experienced by adults in England and Wales, with around 3.5 million incidents. Online shopping fraud, phishing, and romance scams are the fastest-growing categories.
Violence Holding Steady
Violence against the person remains the largest recorded crime category, but the trend is broadly flat. Within this, harassment and stalking offences have increased (partly due to better recording), while violence with injury has fallen 3%. Knife crime, which gained significant media attention in previous years, is down 6% nationally.
Crime in England vs Wales
Wales consistently records lower crime rates than England. The four Welsh police forces โ South Wales, Gwent, Dyfed-Powys, and North Wales โ collectively record about 72 crimes per 1,000 residents, compared to England's average of 91 per 1,000.
Rural Wales, covered by Dyfed-Powys Police, is among the safest areas in the entire country. South Wales, which includes Cardiff and Swansea, has higher rates but is still below the English average. Explore Welsh force data on our police forces page.
How to Stay Informed
Keeping up with crime trends in your area is straightforward with the right tools:
- Check your postcode โ our postcode search shows all reported crimes within a mile of any UK address.
- Explore the crime map โ our interactive map lets you zoom into any street and see what's been reported.
- Compare areas โ use the safety rankings to compare neighbourhoods, cities, or police force areas.
- Read local police updates โ most forces publish monthly newsletters and attend community meetings where you can ask questions.
Understanding the Data
A few important caveats when reading crime statistics:
- Recorded vs experienced crime โ not all crime is reported. The CSEW suggests only around half of all crime ends up in police records.
- Recording practice changes โ when forces improve their recording standards, crime can appear to rise even when actual offending hasn't changed.
- Population denominators matter โ crime "per 1,000 residents" can be misleading for areas with large daytime populations (like city centres or tourist hotspots).
- Year-on-year vs long-term trends โ a single year's change can be noisy. Look at 3-5 year trends for a more reliable picture.
